February 1 Weekly News!

Happy February!

I cannot believe how quickly the month of January flew by. I hope you all have been staying warm with the very cold weather this month. We have been having fun indoors in room 105 and have been able to get outside many days over the last two weeks!

This upcoming week is the 100th day of school! Friday we will be celebrating by counting our 100 Collections. I sent home directions and a gallon ziplock bag on Friday with your student. If it has been misplaced the directions are as follows:

* Please help your student count 100 of the same item to bring to school by Tuesday 2/5.

* The item of choice must be small enough for the entire collection to fit into a gallon ziplock bag. These items will be coming home with your student before February break! If you want to send in something like Legos that your child would like to have back in their collection, do not worry! Other popular items include pennies, cotton swabs, pasta pieces (preferably a kind that will not snap into multiple pieces) and paper clips. Be creative!

* Please let your kindergartener count the collection. You can help them by making bundles of 10 so they can count to 100 by 10s. One counting strategy we teach is sliding and counting. This practice involves touching the item, sliding it into a new pile a couple of inches away and saying the next number in the sequence (1, 2, 3, etc). Check out my video below for an example of how this is done.

Please email me if you have any questions about the collection!

In other Room 105 news- if you saw my Instagram (mrsgolden105) you will have noticed pictures of us testing wind instruments outside for science! In literacy we had a visit from our book buddies and we have started Literacy RTI. RTI stands for Response to Intervention. With this model of grouping students based on skills they need to work on we are able to give targeted instruction. Ms. Cote and Ms. Socha are two teachers that come and work with our students- Ms. Cote is the Special Education liaison for Kindergarten and Ms. Socha is the K-2 Reading Specialist for Claypit Hill School. While these two teachers have a group, so do Mrs. Morse and I! We play letter games, syllable matching, do word sorts and read "just right" books- just to name a few activities. We can talk more about this at the March conference if you have any questions.

Have a great week!
