Week 15 News

Happy Friday!

This week was filled with fun as we spent time doing some different activities than we are used to! On Wednesday, we observed the band concert and then had a special lunch with Mrs. Murray in our classroom! Today, our Reading Buddies from Mrs. Murphy's class came to make snowman glyphs with us. The warm weather today also warranted a few extra minutes of outside play.

In literacy, we have been reading different versions of The Gingerbread Man and comparing the details! So far we have read The Gingerbread Man, The Gingerbread Baby, and The Gingerbread Boy. In library this week, students read The Gingerbread Man Loose in the School with Mrs. Burman!

We have two more letters to learn in Fundations and then we are done learning our entire alphabet. Next week we will be learning "z" and "qu". In Fundations we teach "q" as "qu" because this is primarily how the letter "q" shows up in English words, for example, in the word "queen" or the name "Quentin." Later in the year we will learn digraphs: "wh," "ch," "sh," "th," and "ck."

In math we have continued work in comparing numbers as greater than, less than and equal to each other. We have also started our unit on measurement which compares lengths. In kindergarten, the standard students are expected to know is how to "compare two objects with a common measurable attribute and describes the difference." Students will learn how to talk about objects being longer or shorter than other objects, for example.

Here are some helpful reminders:

1. Please pack a healthy and filling snack for your child each day in a separate container than their lunch box. Some children have been saying they are hungry and want to choose more food from their lunch box, and some do not have a snack at all and need to eat from their lunch at our morning snack.

2. All students need winter clothes in their extra clothes bag that is left here at school. Please send some pants and a long sleeved shirt with your student next week.

3. With the upcoming winter holiday, I am curious who will be in school next week. Please fill out the survey to let me know if your child is not going to be here any days for a planned absence.

Have a great weekend!
